Wooden Handicraft
Wood is a wonderful material for crafting.
The skilled workmen craft the exclusive wooden handicraft collection
giving them flawless finish. The items are made from various types of wood
including teak, sisam, sal, sandalwood, rosewood, oak, ebony and bamboo.
Today the artisans are practicing and preserving the old skills of working
with natural materials like wood to produce fine pieces of furniture and
decorative art. There has been a complete revival of the traditional and
antique wood craft, owning to its uniqueness and demand both in India and
abroad. Artisans are involved in continuously experimenting with designs
and therefore creating a blend of traditional and modern wood craft items.
These wood craft embody quality and tactility that no machine can
reproduce.
One of the oldest forms of arts and crafts Carvings is probably the oldest
form of the arts and crafts. Carvings which involves shaping wood into
various articles or objects has been practiced for many years. The list of
carved items is never ending, it includes wheels, wagons, furnitures,
decoratives, canoes, toys, bows and arrows, clubs, spears and the list
goes on.
Before carving it is necessary to first identify the texture of wood –
either hardwood or softwood. Hardwood refers to the one that comes from
deciduous broadleaved tree, which shed their leaves annually. Softwood
comes from trees bearing cones and most of which are evergreen. Soft wood
is ideal for carving, since it is easy to cut, does'nt splinter, glues
well and is good for laminating. On the other hand, hard wood is quite
brittle and difficult to carve with a knife or chisel. Most desirable
texture for best carving results is therefore an extremely soft wood with
a very featureless graining.
